The Swedish Academy of Realist Art, SARA

Master the technical skills of drawing and painting—and learn how to use them creatively.

SARA, celebrating 20 years in 2026 (founded in Stockholm 2006) was Sweden's first school of fine art dedicated to traditional, representational drawing and painting. SARA provides rigorous, intensive training in realistic drawing and painting, combining the traditions of the Renaissance and European academies with contemporary teaching methods. Our focus is on developing an exceptionally high level of technical skill while encouraging students to work from life, think creatively, use their imagination, and develop their own artistic ideas.

At SARA, students learn to:

- Draw and paint to a very high professional standard.
- Develop strong technical skills in drawing, values, edges, colour, and painting.
- Work from observation and from life.
- Think creatively and develop their imagination.
- Turn technical skills into personal, contemporary works of art.

We believe that technical mastery provides the foundation for artistic freedom. Students therefore spend significant time building fundamental skills through carefully structured exercises. At the same time, they are encouraged to apply those skills creatively, developing their own ideas and visual language.

Individual instruction
SARA's three-year program is demanding and highly focused. Students receive daily, intensive individual instruction, allowing teachers to identify the students strengths and areas for development and provide direct, practical feedback. This close instruction leads to rapid progress.

The curriculum is carefully structured to ensure that students develop a comprehensive set of fundamental skills, while remaining flexible enough to accommodate individual needs and goals. Every exercise has a clear purpose: to help students understand and master skills such as accurate drawing, proportion, values, edge quality, colour, composition, and painting technique.

Students work alongside one another in the model room and ateliers, creating a collaborative environment where beginners and advanced students can learn from and inspire each other.

From traditional skills to contemporary careers
The combination of strong technical ability, creative thinking, imagination, and practical professional skills prepares graduates for careers as fine artists as well as opportunities across the wider creative industries. These skills can be valuable in fields such as concept art, illustration, restoration, games, and visual effects.

An international school in southern Sweden
SARA is an international school with students from around the world. English is the principal language of instruction.

The academy is located in Simrishamn, a historic coastal town in Österlen in southern Sweden. SARA moved from Stockholm to Simrishamn in 2015, attracted by the area's exceptional natural beauty and long-established artistic culture. Österlen is home to a particularly high concentration of working artists and has long been associated with the arts.

SARA occupies an impressive 19th-century building in the centre of Simrishamn. Despite its peaceful coastal setting, the academy is well connected: Copenhagen is approximately two hours away by train, while a ferry connection to continental Europe is accessible by train. Simrishamn is also well connected to Swedish cities such as Malmö and Lund, that are within 1,5 hours travel distance by train or bus.

SARA also offers summer workshops and evening classes. Visit our website for current information about programs, courses, and admission.

Sanna Tomac

Artistic Director/Co-Founder

Sanna was born in Sweden and studied drawing and painting at The Florence Academy of Art in Italy between 1996-1998. Afterward, she studied briefly with the painter Odd Nerdrum in Norway, together with Hans-Peter Szameit, they being the first students coming from an classical atelier background to connect and study with Nerdrum and his Norwegian school. In 2001, Sanna, together with Hans, founded Pantura Studios in the United States, and taught a growing group of students while establishing her painting career and taking commissions. In early 2006, Sanna returned to Sweden and founded The Swedish Academy of Realist Art, along with Hans. Since then, Sanna has devoted her time to teaching and developing SARA’s education as well as her own artistic work. One of her most prominent paintings is a monumental ceiling painting executed for Bååtska Palace in Stockholm.  Measuring over seven meters by four meters, the massive commissioned painting was mounted into the palace’s 16th-century ceiling and inaugurated in the presence of Sweden’s King, Carl XVI Gustaf, in 2012. She has also done a number of formal portrait commissions, including one of Sweden’s Prince Bertil, which hangs in the Royal Swedish Palace.  Sanna’s paintings and drawings can be found in public and private collections throughout the world.

Hans-Peter Szameit

Co-Founder

Hans-Peter was born in the United States from European immigrant parents. Intending to study Fine Art at Augustana University (SD,USA), its modernist approach was not what he was seeking, so he instead earned his degree in Literature and Philosophy. Later, he once again focused his attention on art and studied drawing and painting at The Florence Academy of Art, in Italy from 1995-1998 where he also received a scholarship to teach there while still a student. In 1999, he studied with the painter Odd Nerdrum in Norway. In 2001 he founded Pantura Studios in the United States, together with Sanna Tomac, where they worked and taught a small group of students coming from across the country and abroad. In early 2006 they moved to Sweden and founded The Swedish Academy of Realist Art (SARA) in Stockholm. Hans has been a primary teacher and lecturer at SARA since it’s foundation and has a deep passion for teaching and sharing knowledge. Hans-Peter’s paintings, drawings and etchings can be found in public and private collections throughout the world.
