17th ARC Salon Semi-Finalists in Lunar Codex
Published on September 24, 2024
In partnership with the Art Renewal Center (ARC), the Lunar Codex will now be including all 1,970 + images of semi-finalist works from the 17th ARC Salon in its Polaris archive. This archive is targeting a launch date of September 2025, through NASA mission CLPS-TO-20A, via the SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket and the Astrobotic Griffin lunar lander, headed for the lunar south pole. Polaris is expected to be a multimedia archive based on nickel foil, Nanofiche, semiconductor and/or ceramic memory, and synthetic DNA, with the metallic-based archives expected to last over a million years. The Lunar Codex currently represents curated cultural artifacts - including art, writing, music, and film - from 254 countries, territories, and Indigenous nations. ARC artists are on six of the seven Lunar Codex missions, with the first successful Moon landing on February 22, 2024. In this mission, scores of ARC-related works were included. With three missions launched, and four more on schedule, the Lunar Codex remains the largest and most global cultural heritage project of its kind.
