Week 1 - Hands & Forearm
"The human hand contains 27 bones and a complex network of tendons—mastering them is the key to a convincing figure. Join us for a practical workshop that bridges the gap between anatomical theory and the living form. From the stillness of casts to the energy of the live model, learn to describe the hand with the clarity of the Old Masters."
Workshop Overview: A Practical Approach to the Hand
This workshop offers a structured, step-by-step methodology for capturing the complexity of the human hand. By blending anatomical study with classical observation, students will move from foundational understanding to expressive life drawing.
The Curriculum
Anatomy & Mechanics: We begin with a deep dive into the anatomical structures of the arm, wrist, and hand, providing the "internal map" necessary for accurate drawing.
Drawing from Casts: Students will first translate three-dimensional forms into two-dimensional space by drawing from plaster casts, allowing for a controlled study of light and shadow.
The Old Master Lens: We will analyze Old Master drawings to see how legendary artists simplified anatomical knowledge into clear, effective masses.
Working from Life: Applying these lessons, students will transition to drawing directly from a live model to capture gesture, vitality, and skin tones.
Instructional Features
Daily Demonstrations: Kerry will provide step-by-step demonstrations each day, breaking down the specific stages of constructing the hand.
Flexible Media: While the primary focus is drawing, students are welcome to paint from the live model during the final stages of the workshop.
