Brought to Light: European Paintings from Lyman Allyn Art Museum

This exhibition showcases the Lyman Allyn’s collection of European paintings, highlighting a selection of portraits, history paintings, religious scenes, landscapes, still-lifes, and genre scenes from the early Renaissance through the 19th century. Although European paintings have been part of the collection since the museum’s founding in 1932, the galleries currently emphasize American art, with European paintings infrequently on view.

To commemorate the five hundredth anniversary of the death of Leonardo da Vinci, The Met presents the artist’s painting Saint Jerome Praying in the Wilderness, a special loan from the Vatican Museums. 5 July, 2019

This exhibition examines the varying landscape of the Northeast over the last hundred or so years. Drawn largely from the Lyman Allyn’s permanent collection, this exhibition includes watercolors of the forest, fields, hills, shoreline, and sea. It also explores the built environment, with urban and suburban scenes that reflect on changing demographics. The exhibition looks at watercolor as a medium, exploring different artists’ techniques and considering how the quick-drying pigments are useful for artists working outdoors.

The exhibition runs from April 27 – August 3, 2019 at the Lyman Allyn Art Museum, 625 Williams Street, New London, CT 06320.

14th ARC Salon in PoetsArtists Magazine

5 July, 2019

PoetsArtists Magazine has recently published an issue of their magazine featuring "The Tempest" by Randalf Dilla, who won the PoetsArtists Magazine award in the 14th ARC Salon Competition. The article about Dilla was written by Lorena Kloosterboer.

“In Tempest, Dilla depicts dynamics that he considers his artistic inspirations. We see a portrait of his beautiful young wife amongst elegantly framed masterpieces on a wall—in this case Filipino masters displayed in the National Museum in the Philippines. The museum wall and the paintings are swept by a powerful airstream embodying the energy that grips the artist when he contemplates great works of art.”

14th ARC Salon Results Announced

1 July, 2019

The Art Renewal Center is pleased to present the winners and finalists of the 14th International ARC Salon Competition! This year the ARC received over 4,300 entries from 73 countries. Our finalists represented here today constitute approximately 35% of works submitted, just over 1500 works. ARC has acquired 16 new works for the ARC collection, valued at over $125,000.

Our highest award, Best in Show, went to Gregory Mortenson, for his figurative entry of 'Standing Proud', where Mortenson depicts a young girl he met while working on a humanities project in Haiti. About the work, Mortenson said, "This young girl is growing up in an orphanage in Haiti. She has survived an earthquake and a hurricane and is still standing proud." With her feet firmly planted on rocky soil, this contemporary depiction of human strength meets the viewer eye to eye.
