Living Tradition: Students of R.H. Ives Gammell

3 March, 2022

A former president of the Guild of Boston Artists, Robert Hale Ives Gammell (1893-1981) is often credited with preserving the "Classical Realist" and Boston School traditions of painting in America. Paul Ingbretson and Thomas Dunlay, former students and current teachers of the Gammell method, both stress however, "He did not teach the realism of today but rather representational painting as practiced by the great masters of the past with a view to 'largeness of intention'."

Alongside two historic works by the late master, the show will include paintings by current Guild members including ARC Living Master Richard Whitney and head of the ARC Approved Atelier, Ingbretson Studio, Paul Ingbretson. Each painter in this exhibition creates with a deep knowledge of visual relationships, and each has left or continues to leave an indelible mark on the American tradition of representational painting, demonstrating R.H. Ives Gammell's purpose of teaching "the technical means of expressing [the artist's] reaction to what he sees."

The exhibition runs from April 2 - 30, 2022 at the Guild of Boston Artists, 162 Newbury Street, Boston MA 02116.

April 2, 2022 3-5pm: Opening Reception (free and open to the public. Please RSVP)

April 23, 2022 2pm: RH Ives Gammell: A Non-painter's Perspective - A Lecture with Elizabeth Ives Hunter (free and open to the public. Please RSVP to reserve a seat.)

Great Lakes Academy of Fine Art

5 March, 2022

The Great Lakes Academy of Fine Art, located in the unique harbor setting of Duluth, MN, is a small, private studio offering classical training programs. Descended directly through the Boston Impressionists from the Great European Academic System, the continued focus of their program is to train up an individual’s level of craftsmanship in order to bring this great tradition into the 21st century.

The apprentices’ time is entirely spent in front of the easel learning to see and translate the light-filled, three-dimensional world onto a two-dimensional surface using pencil, charcoal, and oil paint. Students will systematically work their way through the program at their own pace, eight hours a day, five days a week. Tuition primarily goes towards studio rent which students will have access to year-round. Apprentices will be challenged with increasingly more advanced and difficult assignments throughout their four years.

After over forty years of working full-time professionally in his studio, Jeffrey T. Larson (head instructor and co-founder of GLAFA) has learned that there are no “secrets of the old masters”. The only “secret” and key to success is time spent building a solid foundation along with good habits under the tutelage of the master artist with the trained eye and lots of focused, hard work.

The full-time program consists of a maximum of sixteen apprentices, with three or four being accepted each year.

Writing for the Visual Arts - Florence Academy of Art

1 March, 2022

Writing for the Visual Arts
September 26 - December 9
Taught remotely from the Florence campus

November 28 - December 9
In-person option in Florence

If you would like to write with mastery about figurative art, or simply further your knowledge of art history and the history of literature about art, this course will survey figurative art throughout the ages, while examining the techniques that literature has historically used to write about art.

Starting with the Ancient Greeks and Romans, progressing on to the Medieval period, the arrival of Humanism, the rediscovery of Classical forms, the establishment of the Academies during the Renaissance, and the role of the Academies through the Early Modern period, you will learn to analyze select works by their medium, composition, subject matter, and patronage, and to place them within the greater context of the long tradition of figurative art. By studying the rhetorical techniques that literature has historically used in writing about art, you will develop your writing skills through short weekly exercises, moving step-by-step from literary strategies to the organization and construction of a solid expository essay by the end of the course.

In-person Option: Students may experience the Florence Academy from within to understand how students train to become figurative painters and sculptors, while also touring the main museums, galleries, and churches of Florence, during the final 2 weeks of class.

New ARC Living Artist

3 March, 2022

ARC is pleased to welcome Maegan Oberhardt as a new ARC Living Artist!

Maegan spent her early years surrounded by nature and native wildlife. This environment taught her appreciation of nature and inspired her passion for animals, which became the foundation for her artistic creativity.

Maegan uses "Fumage" or "Painting with Fire": the technique of dancing an open flame underneath paper to leave a fragile layer of soot and etching it away to reveal the artwork. This technique of using man-made fire to burn paper is a commentary on the conflict between man and nature. Maegan has created a unique style and a collection of artworks that raise awareness and provide a voice for many species at risk.

Raphael and his School Drawing Connections

5 March, 2022

Following the 500th anniversary of the death of Raphael (1483–1520) in 2020, experience the Italian Renaissance master's exquisite drawings and trace his influence through the work of his pupils.

During his relatively short life, Raphael went from provincial obscurity as the son of a court artist in Urbino in central Italy, to establishing himself as the dominant painter, architect and all-round artistic designer at the Papal court in Rome.

The 29 works on display will highlight Raphael’s development as a draughtsman and show how his talented pupils – Perino del Vaga, Polidoro da Caravaggio, Giulio Romano and Giovanni Francesco Penni – continued to draw with a similar inventive and free-flowing spirit.

The exhibition runs from 2/2 - 5/15/22 at the British Museum Great Russell Street, London, WC1B 3DG, United Kingdom.

Solo Show: Quick to Listen - A Collection of New Works by Nathan Bertling

3 March, 2022

ARC Living Artist Nathan Bertling is holding a solo exhibition titled "Quick to Listen".

"Under the noise and chaos of our current culture, this body of work began in 2019. Born from an impulse to find respite in what was quiet and close, I sought signs of life hiding among the overlooked and unseen...When the pandemic erupted in 2020, interrupting life as we knew it, my painting slowed to a halt...2021 proved to be more about apprehending what was needed and less about imposing my artistic will. The paintings now asked more of me: lengthening my patience as they slowed my hand; widening my trust as they deepened my care. As we move into the rest of 2022 and beyond, my hope is that these canvases might convey something of my gratitude for their repose – reflecting the lesson in listening they worked in me."

The exhibition runs from March 1 -12, 2022 at Dacia Gallery, 621 E 11th St, New York, NY.
