In Colour: Polychrome Sculpture in France 1850-1910

Published on July 31, 2018

Relatively unknown, 19th century polychrome sculpture is one of the key facets of the history of sculpture. Until the beginning of this century, the only colours permitted in statuary were the white of marble and the monochrome patina of bronzes. But the discovery of the use of polychromy in ancient architecture and sculpture changed people’s perspective, as well as generating heated debate.

Pioneering sculptors like Charles Cordier began to specialize in this technique from the 1850s. Once the controversy had died down, color began to establish its legitimacy of the Second Empire thanks to its decorative character, prevailing under the influence of Symbolism and Art Nouveau as of the 1880s.

The exhibition runs from 6/12-9/9/18 at the Musée d'Orsay, 62 Rue de Lille, Paris, France.

Stephen Gjertson Article

Published on July 18, 2018

ARC Living Master,  Stephen Gjertson, has recently been interviewed by Emilio Longo - Visual Arts Teacher and author of Skill-Based Art: A Learning Resource for Art Students and Artist-Teachers.

“In college I encountered hostility to representational art. My drawing instructors called it old fashioned and outdated. It was OK in the past, but serious contemporary artists created more expressive and relevant kinds of work. I had never been interested in so called Modern Art. It didn’t appeal to me because the representational element was either absent, distorted, or crudely rendered.”

Bouquet - Natura Morte

Published on July 18, 2018

ARC Associate Living Master™ Louise Feneley's painting 'Bouquet - Natura Morte' has received a 'Highly Commended' distinction in the Waterhouse Natural Science Art Prize.

"The diverse, extraordinary forms of the underlying structure of leaves, seeds or flowers, of creatures like snakes, crabs, birds, mammals, and of shells, sponges, seaweed or wood, that remain when the force of life has departed, seem insignificant and of little consequence. But these intimate aspects of the natural world build soil and landscape in their own way, and who has not picked up a tiny skeleton, shell, unusual stone or withered flower, to marvel?"

Following the close of the exhibition, this work will form part of the tour to the National Archives of Australia in Canberra.

The exhibition takes place at the South Australian Museum, North Terrace, Adelaide, South Australia 5000 from June 8 - August 5, 2018
