New Work Added to the Live ARC Salon
April 28, 2017
We are pleased to announce that Winter by Robert Liberace has been added to the 12th International ARC Salon Exhibition.
"The passing of seasons marks significant transformations, evoking endless cycles of birth, death and rebirth. The painting, Winter, is one of a series of paintings intended to touch on these characteristics. It shows my youngest daughter, Ava, as the personification of Winter; bundled and protected in wools and furs. She is adorned with branches from our holly tree, an ancient tree of hope, which signifies continued growth and renewal." - Robert Liberace

New Addition to ARC Salon
April 28, 2017
We are pleased to announce that Happy Birthday, Tristesse by Dirk Dzimirsky has been added to the 12th International ARC Salon Exhibition.
"This artwork is not about a fun birthday party. I imagined what it would be like leading a dull life without perspective and how it would look when a person would celebrate that, just for the sake of celebration, not because you cherish it. This probably comes from an experience I had when I was a child. I attended a friend's birthday party but it was such a sad and depressing event because his mother did not care about him and all the children felt quite uncomfortable and were unhappy. Until then I never really had experienced something depressing like that, but the memory of this never went away and influenced my art later onwards" - Dirk Dzimirsky
The 12th International ARC Salon Exhibition will be on view at the Salmagundi Club, NYC from May 12th – June 1st with the public opening reception on Saturday, May 13th from 11am to 3pm. New Addition to ARC Live Salon
April 28, 2017
We are pleased to announce that Still Life: Flowers by Dmitry Sevryukov has been added to the 12th International ARC Salon Exhibition.
Dmitry Sevryukov is an acknowledged Realist artist whose work impetuously wins recognition all over the world. Inspired by masterpieces of the old masters and being taught by distinguished modern painters, Dmitry has developed his own method of realistic, artistic representation of natural objects, based on the thorough elaboration of compositional details in the context of the overall unity. At the same time, the magic play of contrasts, forms, colors and shades in Dmitiry’s paintings, as well as his skillful use of light and formation, generates that extraordinary perception of his work which differentiates the genuine work of art from just the traditional. The unique paintings of Dmitry Sevryukov are a rare opportunity to admire and enjoy; magnificent, harmonious and multifaceted, nature made objects.

New Addition to the Live ARC Salon
April 28, 2017
We are pleased to announce that Ju Ju by Jeff Hein has been added to the 12th International ARC Salon Exhibition.
This painting of Ju Ju is a portrait of the artist’s youngest apprentice at age 14. Capturing her intelligence and a sense of seriousness, the artist depicts that point in a girl’s life where she is transforming into a woman. The lighting in this painting is of particular interest, as there are two distinctive light sources; one coming from the sitter’s upper left illuminating her face, and the second from behind her head, causing an earthy halo from man made spot lights to appear around the rim of her hair. The artist accurately captured the sensation of this phenomenon with hot pink, wild, brushstrokes.

New Work Added to ARC Salon
April 28, 2017
We are pleased to announce that Neck and Neck by Anni Crouter has been added to the 12th International ARC Salon Exhibition.
“I often only include a singular subject in my work, but I thought the interaction of this mother and her young one was so endearing that I needed to paint it. I also do not usually include a lot of information in my backgrounds, as to focus on my subjects. The beautiful pose and long necks easily made a good composition. This piece was a joy to work on, I was almost sorry I had to put my brushes down.” - Anni Crouter

New Work Added to ARC Salon
April 27, 2017
We are pleased to announce that XXII II MMVI by Kazua Torigoe has been added to the 12th International ARC Salon Exhibition.
XXII II MMVI is a play on the classical idea of trompe-l'oeil and is painted on a traditional copper plate. The magic of this painting occurs when looking at it from approximately 6 feet away. This is where the objects in this work come alive and take on a feeling of the fourth-dimension, existing in our same time and space. When one approaches to get a closer look, the objects re-enter the three-dimensional plane and the viewer can tell it is in fact a painting.
The 12th International ARC Salon Exhibition will be on view at the Salmagundi Club, NYC from May 12th – June 1st with the public opening reception on Saturday, May 13th from 11am to 3pm. We are pleased to announce that The Transcendence by Kevin Moore has been added to the 12th International ARC Salon Exhibition.
“The Transcendence was originally shown at Rehs Contemporary Galleries as a part an exhibition called ‘Sexes’. This painting is about how feminine beauty is transformed through the masks of makeup, jewelry, clothing, etc. All cultures share these characteristics of enhancing the female body, and an interesting question arises. What do women visually communicate with their bodies through these masks?” - Kevin Moore

New Addition to ARC Salon
April 27, 2017
We are pleased to announce that Slumber by Tina Spratt has been added to the 12th International ARC Salon Exhibition.
"I wanted to create the feeling of a fleeting moment in time, when unaware of being observed, there exists a naturalness and intimacy. The sleeping figure could move or open her eyes at any moment, and there is a voyeuristic feel to the painting. I frequently use fabrics in my work and the surrounding fabrics are beautiful in their own right. With a fascinating array of textures and subtle colors that enhance the overall mood of the piece, they also surround and almost cradle the figure, adding to the sense of intimacy and belonging. I hope to try and create paintings that are living and breathing with an honest, everyday beauty." - Tina Spratt

New Work Added to ARC Salon
April 26, 2017
We are pleased to announce that Envisage by Olena Babak has been added to the 12th International ARC Salon Exhibition.
“Winter is the time when I have a chance to spend days in the studio and work on figurative projects. This portrait started as a study for a painting and then it took a life of its own. I often use charcoal to explore my ideas before going into paint as it is a very relaxing and meditative time. Here, I was trying to capture a fleeting moment when an idea comes to you. The smile represents the appreciation of it, the raised hand is the willingness for it, and the birds are the ebb and flow of creative energy. I prefer to use charcoal in most of my drawings. It gives me a range of values where I can easily achieve a delicate or expressionistic surface, without reaching for any other materials.” - Olena Babak

New Addition to Live ARC Salon
April 26, 2017
We are pleased to announce that Exodus by Michael C Hayes has been added to the 12th International ARC Salon Exhibition.
"The title of this painting, Exodus, implies both the leaving of an old place and the wandering search that must take place before a new chapter can begin. Beyond being an amalgamation of all the elements I enjoy painting, armor, beautiful women, architecture and horses, Exodus is a very personal piece for me that represents a recent period in my life. After years of working as a commercial illustrator, I made the decision to take a leap of faith and leave that career to pursue my own artistic visions. This was a time of both fearful uncertainty as well as hope for me, and I was driven to portray those feelings through the expression and body language of the painting’s protagonist, combined with the overall mood of the piece." - Michael C Hayes

New Addition to Live ARC Salon
April 26, 2017
We are pleased to announce that Patience, Cocoons Are Temporary by Laura Pritchett has been added to the 12th International ARC Salon Exhibition.
"Patience, Cocoons Are Temporary, was an exercise of resting in the present and believing that grace, through difficulty, is rewarded with valuable growth. With her face veiled from view, the subject's emotions are primarily expressed by her folded figure in contrast to the freely flowing fabric, unfurling above her. The invisible gust of wind that embodies her scarf is symbolic of God breathing life into dust, a stirring of hope, and a promise of future wings." - Laura Pritchett

New Work Added to Live ARC Salon
April 25, 2017
We are pleased to announce that Perched by Lorena Pugh has been added to the 12th International ARC Salon Exhibition.
“Like so many artists before me, I relish painting the womanly pear. It is also a pleasure, when buying a pear, to find it wrapped in tissue. Over time these tissue wrappers became a major component of my work. There is something enticing about an organic form wrapped in translucent material. The nuance of how light filters through the diaphanous wrapper with a seemingly endless variety of folds and wrinkles is fascinating. Then, the light bounces off the pear bringing warmth or coolness with it to move again through the wrapper. It is a great delight for the eye. This piece, Perched, was a commission for a woman who has an affinity for birds. I had no intention when composing this painting to mirror her love of birds, but upon completion, I noticed it seems poised for flight.” – Lorena Pugh The 12th International ARC Salon Exhibition will be on view at the Salmagundi Club, NYC from May 12th – June 1st with the public opening reception on Saturday, May 13th from 11am to 3pm. April 25, 2017
We are pleased to announce that Life No. 1: Dust Impressions by Hongzheng Wang has been added to the 12th International ARC Salon Exhibition.
"Selecting a woman, a fish and a burning candle as elements of my painting, I try to dispel the color in a simpler way to create a quiet and peaceful atmosphere, in which the woman, fish and candle are unified in a simple gray tone. It is expected that every viewer will not only be attracted to the superficial beauty, but also gain insight into the original entities being described through the work. My work does not aim to simply reproduce the reality, for absolutely ‘real’ things are not real to me. They are seemingly clear and ‘real’ but in actuality they are fantastical and transcend reality." - Hongzheng Wang

We are pleased to announce that The Coming Rain by David Santillanes has been added to the 12th International ARC Salon Exhibition. "This painting began as a plein air study on a sunny afternoon by Crystal Creek. The story and the painting quickly changed as storm clouds began to build over the mountains. New Work Added to Live ARC Salon
April 24, 2017
We are pleased to announce that Reflection by Matthew Bober has been added to the 12th International ARC Salon Exhibition.
"I designed this painting around the idea of setting up a still life in water. Setting up a dark lined reflecting pool in relation with the subdued chromatic background, the floating flowers, and the dark pedestal in the center all combined to create the atmosphere I was trying to achieve, stillness, and a feeling of architecture being taken back to a natural state. Atop the alter I was interested in the interplay of the delicate decay of the doll’s wax face and the sharp angular highlights of the plastic encompassing the monkey skull; so different, yet both belonging in that work. In my work, I give great thought to every object I let in, the light, the colors, the design, always making sure it is as tight as it can be and all working together to convey the emotion intended." – Matthew Bober

April 24, 2017
We are pleased to announce that Indian Peahen by Grace Kim has been added to the 12th International ARC Salon Exhibition. "I chose to paint the head of the Indian Peahen to draw attention to a bird that is unfamiliar, and often overlooked. The peacock, which only refers to the males of the species, is widely recognized by its iridescent blue and green plumage. The peahen is often described as ‘drab’ and ‘mottled brown’ in comparison, and is rarely an artist’s focus. When I created Indian Peahen, the most challenging aspect was painting the crown of the peahen. It took well over one month to reproduce the detail and intricacy of the individual feathers. Just like in our society, where there is a disparity between men and women, this is also the case with the peafowl. The peacock gets all the attention, and all the glory, while the peahen is ignored. I enjoyed capturing and showcasing the peahen’s inherent beauty." - Grace Kim

New Addition to Live ARC Salon
April 24, 2017
We are pleased to announce that Crimson Ribbon by Heather Theurer has been added to the 12th International ARC Salon Exhibition. “As the years have passed and I’ve experienced more of life, I’ve discovered with somewhat of a sad realization that it is human nature to want to take the easy path, the one that requires the least of us and that makes no demands upon our attention or time. We put our blinders on, so to speak, and go about our daily tasks with very little thought of the extraordinary. Crimson Ribbon is a fearless refusal of this frame of mind. While the title points out only a minuscule portion of the painting, representing our absorption by the mundane, the remainder of the painting insists that we enjoy a broader view. There is beauty all around us, in the tiniest of details, if we will but take the time to observe, and once we have had a true taste of the magnificent beauty of the earth, we are changed forever.” - Heather Theurer

New Work Added to Live Salon
April 21, 2017
We are pleased to announce that I Am My Word by Nik Anikis Skusek has been added to the 12th International ARC Salon Exhibition.
“I Am My Word is a still life painted in honor of all brave fireman that assisted, unconditionally, hundreds of people in need of help. The Fire Museum of Sevnica, where I come from, lent me a parade helmet, sword and a badge all from 1918 for the creation of this painting. This tenebrist still life is a metaphor for help coming from the darkness and for bringing help as well, symbolized by the light and dramatic color in the foreground. The light and dark contrast on the objects create a beautiful depth, from the background all the way to the written statement on the table. The letter in the foreground is an oath to people that Fireman gave when they decided on this path of help, a declaration of sacrifice, danger and risk. Even though these objects are Yugoslavian, the painting is an anthem to all brave men and women who gave their lives in sacrifice for others anywhere on Earth. I am grateful to the Fire Museum of Sevnica for their trust and support.” -Nik Anikis Skusek

New Addition to the ARC Salon Exhibition
April 21, 2017
We are pleased to announce that Annunciation by Ken Salaz has been added to the 12th International ARC Salon Exhibition.
“I approached this landscape painting not in terms of a mirror reflection of the world around us, but rather as a psychological reflection on the real meaning of our possibilities here on earth. It is essential to take a moment and reflect and ponder, ‘What is the real meaning of my existence on earth?’ Close observation of nature can shed a new light on the question that applies to each human on earth. Somewhere in the thick woods of the Catskill Mountains, I encountered a sanctuary, a secluded cove, on a forgotten lake, where the rebirth of nature was taking place before my eyes. The sun was emerging with renewed vigor, announcing the birth of the ‘Primavera’. The harshness of winter gave way to a new spring, pierced by the heated and glowing rays of Apollo. How is it that nature performs this miracle of re-birth each year and yet we remain oblivious to its message? Are we not ourselves, as men and women, capable of such a transcendent transformation? May the golden sunlight of spring pierce our hearts and urge each of us to seek our higher natures and live them daily, reverently, and boldly.” – Ken Salaz

We are pleased to announce that The Whale Watcher by Duffy Sheridan has been added to the 12th International ARC Salon Exhibition. “My wife and I have been living in Kauai for a few years now and in that time, we have learned a new skill, whale watching. There are few things more pleasurable than scanning the sea before you on a clear, warm Hawaiian day. In this painting, I was simply trying to capture that wonderful concentration that overtakes a practiced whale watcher.” - Duffy Sheridan Duffy Sheridan is represented by Jones and Terwilliger Galleries in Carmel and Palm Desert, California and Mary Martin Galleries in Naples, Florida and Charleston, South Carolina.

April 20, 2017
We are pleased to announce that Non Fiction by Casey Childs has been added to the 12th International ARC Salon Exhibition.
"I think every person who has a love for the literary world can relate to this painting. Libraries are inspiring places that contain a wealth of knowledge just waiting to be explored. Many hours can be spent wandering through a sea of volumes of various shapes, sizes, and colors; up and down shelves, back and forth through stacks, searching for that perfect work. Sometimes the greatest joy is in the search. Looking for that one book that will entertain us, educate us, inspire us; a solitary task that can only be accomplished alone. We are pleased to announce that Sword in Hand, Greed of Command by Bruno Galuzzi Corsini has been added to the 12th International ARC Salon Exhibition.
"Sword in Hand, Greed of Command was inspired by the influence power can exert on a person. I come from Brazil, a country where corruption is very visible and at the same time it is hard to catch. That is something I wanted to portray using a character that was imbued with said power and would provoke you to wonder, 'How did this man achieve such power?' More importantly, now that he wields it, what will he use it for? I aim to raise such questions to create a story behind the image. Creating an image with meaning is my ultimate goal as an artist." - Bruno Galuzzi Corsini

We are pleased to announce that Ara Martis by Bruno Vepkhvadze has been added to the 12th International ARC Salon Exhibition.
"The composition Ara Martis (Altar of Mars) is an allegory of rebirth of the ancient world. The artwork exhibits a combination of old and new, reconstructed brand new Roman armor, placed on the ancient original Roman altar. In this picture, I show how the ancient world and classic culture are given new life, deriving from the deep and solid past. The new Roman armor and old altar symbolically describes this idea, showing the great interest towards antique culture which reappeared in societies regularly throughout the centuries. For the role of this strong and solid base, I have chosen the Altar of Mars, the God of war, and one of the significant Roman mythological figures. The subject of this painting shows an old and mighty soul of the ancient world, which time by time has blown new life to the époques" – Bruno Vepkhvadze

We are pleased to announce that Laundry by Jeffrey T. Larson has been added to the 12th International ARC Salon Exhibition.
"Laundry is the latest in a long series of thematically based paintings. Thirty years ago I came across the Spanish artist Sorolla and it changed the course of my artistic life. I had been trained in the lineage of the Boston school as a classical impressionist, studying four years at Atelier Lack under Richard Lack. I had also spent several years painting outside 'plein air'. I thought I had a solid direction for what could be done in capturing outdoor natural light, especially when working with the figure.
That is until I saw the Sorolla retrospective. It opened my eyes to another way of translating brilliant outdoor light onto canvas using our limited pigments. I never was interested in painting like him, but instead working to be just as good if possible in my own way. Working with the figure and the sheets as the subject, I had rare control outside, compositionally with color and pattern themes, along with designing quality of light. I could use bounced light, reflected light, transparent light, translucent light, flat light, all as compositional elements and artistic opportunities. With each painting that I have done over the years, I have learned much, but it is in this piece especially that I feel I have achieved something of what it was that I have been working towards." - Jeffrey T. Larson This work is on loan from a private collection and will be shown in NY only. The 12th International ARC Salon Exhibition will be on view at the Salmagundi Club, NYC from May 12th – June 1st with the public opening reception on Saturday, May 13th from 11am to 3pm. We are pleased to announce that Under Heaven by Taffari Crawford has been added to the 12th International ARC Salon Exhibition.
"The image is composed of a pair of black, male hands performing the 'blood' gang sign, with a few very small and delicate flowers placed between the fingers. I wanted to use this image because of how symbolic it appeared; the hands performing this gesture and its relation to violence, the symbolism of flowers and also, the word ‘blood’ and its meaning. I also find interesting, the physical representation of words and the abstraction which occurs when they are made from found objects. I found it interesting that this word could be made from just strategically wrapping your fingers together. There is something quite crude, juvenile and innocent about it, that I find interesting. The flowers are strategically placed in order to abstract the image of the hands a little, for those who maybe familiar with the sign. Conceptually, I think the flowers are seductive, making the image; which would commonly be viewed as negative; more approachable to reveal the quieter aspects it." – Taffari Crawford

We are pleased to announce that Bather by Joshua LaRock has been added to the 12th International ARC Salon Exhibition.
"Little else is as beautiful as natural light revealing the female form, Bather, is something of a sonnet to this radiance. The human form and drapery are two pillars of the classical tradition which I love and where I find constant inspiration, so that was the seed which grew into this work. However, I was seeking to paint it with a distinctly contemporary tone. That tension of attempting to tap into the underlying current of vitality which generated the timeless works of the past, while simultaneously producing them in a way that resonates with viewers today, is something I intend to keep juggling." – Joshua LaRock

We are pleased to announce that Moored in Calmness by Sergio Roffo has been added to the 12th International ARC Salon Exhibition.
"Moored in Calmness was inspired by a salt water lagoon on the island Martha's Vineyard. The study was 11 x 14in. and was painted 'a la prima'. I finished it in one sitting on a late afternoon. As the study was near completion, the sun was just about to set, creating a wonderful glow on the scene that I tried to capture in the larger piece. The broken marsh and beach sand along with the contrast of the trees and shadow reflections completed the composition. I visited this area many times before and the mooring was always without a dory. On this particular day I was rewarded with a dory to complete the scene." - Sergio Roffo This work is on loan from a private collection and will be shown in NY only. We are pleased to announce that Transfiguration by Joseph McGurl has been added to the 12th International ARC Salon Exhibition.
“One meaning of the word transfiguration is to change from a certain state of existence to another more beautiful state. Sketching on location forces me to confront the continually evolving landscape. As I am painting, I see the natural world in a constant state of transfiguration moving from one beautiful state to another uniquely beautiful state. Transfiguration is an imaginary scene, but it is a synthesis of several landscapes I’ve seen and painted over the years. The setting, a tranquil marsh scene in the early summer evening with a dying wind, brings rapid change, and each minute has its own particular beauty. The osprey stand and fly traps are indicative of man witnessing this transfiguration, and they also serve as compositional elements. The features of the landscape depicted serve as a vessel to hold the lighting which is symbolic of the spirituality I find in the natural world.” – Joseph McGurl The 12th International ARC Salon Exhibition will be on view at the Salmagundi Club, NYC from May 12th – June 1st with the public opening reception on Saturday, May 13th from 11am to 3pm. We are pleased to announce that Savoy Cabbage in a Box by Bruno Di Maio has been added to the 12th International ARC Salon Exhibition.
"The beauty and attraction that flowers have always had on painters is an ancient story. Their delicacy, the clearness, their graceful shape and especially the symbolism, are irresistible for artists who love the still-life. However, the creations of nature that daily are on our lunch-table, vegetables and salads, I have always found fascinating and stylish. Their complex shapes and peculiar colors make it appear, to my eyes, as if they are unique 'edibles flowers'. In the special case of the savoy cabbage, its thousands of round green hills crossed by sinuous roads that run to infinity and its regal immanence pushed me to portray it. Seeing it with a high-powered lens is amazing. I inserted this rich life form lying down on a crumpled red paper, its royal mantle, and put it all in a damaged, old, cardboard box. The contrast between something full of life and something lifeless, enhances both their charm. If we want to see the humor of this piece in an ironic way, the painting is an excellent way to keep the savoy cabbage, with all its charm, for a long time, without running the risk of it losing its freshness!" - Bruno Di Maio

We are pleased to announce that Green Clothes by Wei Han has been added to the 12th International ARC Salon Exhibition. "Green Clothes, created with classical painting skills, is an annotation of a present, modern, gentle, Oriental woman. In my mind the feminine, casual nature and slightly drooping face, echoes her green clothes. Her hands, crossed on her chest, gently press her clothes so that she projects a sense of modest beauty. The reconstruction of classical beauty is the ideal that I have been trying to pursue. The expression of these ideals has brought new vitality into my classical painting. The exploration of painting diversity and the concept of reconstructing classical painting techniques while basing the subject on modern life is my goal." – Wei Han

We are pleased to announce that Suzanne by Katie Runde has been added to the 12th International ARC Salon Exhibition. "Suzanne is a portrait of an individual absorbed, midstream in the art of music. French philosopher Simone Weil said 'Absolute unmixed attention is prayer,' and Suzanne's suspended cello suite is just that, the grace and sincerity of a musician at work, lost in its process. As a musician myself, I have been striving to capture the space of deep solitude and flow that lies between a musician and his or her music." – Katie Runde

We are pleased to announce that Sibling Bond by Shana Levenson has been added to the 12th International ARC Salon Exhibition.
“I consider my paintings to be somewhat of a diary of my life, that I’m hopeful others connect with and typically I paint people that are in my life. It allows me quiet time to get to know every nuance in them and spend time with them. Who better to paint than my own children? Divorce is tough on everyone, but especially children. This painting expresses that through challenging times; sibling bonds will always stay strong. My children proved to be extremely resilient after my divorce and have become great friends. My daughter is a true protector over her little brother and he loves and respects her so much. I wanted this piece to express sadness, courage, and love between a brother and a sister.” – Shana Levenson

We are pleased to announce that Self Reflections by Kyle Sims has been added to the 12th International ARC Salon Exhibition.
"While I enjoy painting all the larger felines of the wild, the tiger would have to be up near the top in terms of how striking they are. I think that any wildlife artist worth their salt might agree. However, with this piece, I was initially captivated by the color harmony created by the murky water juxtaposed with the rust colors of the cat. I also liked the thought of pushing the cat to the top of the composition in a sort of extreme way and then to have that balanced by the lines of the water that are almost imitating the stripes of the tiger. It feels like poetry to me the way those lines move and interact with each other, all the while being drawn up to the tiger’s gaze." – Kyle Sims

We are pleased to announce that Abby by Julie Bell has been added to the 12th International ARC Salon Exhibition. "I love solving puzzles. To me, a portrait that I paint, whether it is of a human or an animal, is what I perceive as the solution to the puzzle of that unique being. In a living face, we observe not only that being's entire history played out in every shadow and curve, but also the lives of their ancestors for generations back. Although I don't really specialize in portrait art, I would still say that at the core of all my paintings of both humans and animals is, in fact, a portrait. I read faces and expressions, and then write, with paint, the thousand words that tell that being's story. That is why I paint." - Julie Bell

We are pleased to announce that The Heart of the Gem by He Lihuai has been added to the 12th International ARC Salon Exhibition. "The greatness of a painting does not depend on its size. In fact, many masterpieces before the 19th century are of small sizes, including the works of Vermeer, Alma-Tadema and Fortuny. In my opinion, the reason that the audience adores this small size painting of mine, apart from the beauty and technique, lies another factor. Nowadays we live in a digital age where largeness can be overwhelming and can abuse the visual senses. Smallness is a sort of concentration. For my models, I usually give them some tips about my idea instead of restricting them. When they pose, I take photos of every moment and then select the one I am satisfied with for sketching the general composition. Finally, I create the oil painting from the live model, based on the sketch. I enjoy using copper plate as the base which I have done with this work, though I do work on linen as well. I feel that the copper makes the color of the painting very soft and gentle, which is what I desired for this work. In front of a work of visual art, everyone is equal. No matter what the artwork presents, idealistic, aesthetic, classic, modern or contemporary, the vison sense itself does not tell lies. It is utilitarian minds that make up the lies to convince us that what we are looking at is not what we see!" – He Lihuai

John Rowe in Fine Art Connoisseur

ARC Associate Living Master John Rowe recently had his work "Her Gift" featured on Fine Art Connoisseur magazine's website.
"The painting of my wife and our foster child — who has since been returned to his family — is still very close to me. I watched my wife over months give her love and strength and protection to this child. Tears, joy, fierce protection, devotion, sleepless nights — all while knowing she might never see him again but that he would carry the sense of being loved unconditionally into his future life and it would become a foundation for him."

We are pleased to announce that Consolidation by Lucas Bononi has been added to the 12th International ARC Salon Exhibition.
Lucas Bononi had always been drawn to painting trompe l'oeils, but Consolidation represents his turn from traditional still lifes to the interplay between human and machine. An ode to how technology influences human ontology, Consolidation juxtaposes an old computer with a young lady. The machine confronts the viewer directly, while the human figure pays no attention, staring deeply only at the computer. Bononi invites us to look deeper into the modern man’s interaction with technology in the most mature demonstration yet of his ability to play with shadow and space. We are pleased to announce that Ascolta, ti Ricorderà by Miki K. T. Chart has been added to the 12th International ARC Salon Exhibition.
“This work was inspired by my observation that a busy modern life style often leaves our traditions and heritage behind. In this painting I focused on the bowl back mandolin, a musical instrument, developed in Italy, used to play traditional folk music such as Tarantella. Not many people know how to play it anymore, but a canary still remembers the melody and sings for us. The picture contains my hope that traditions are never lost. Even if one person forgets, someone else will remember it, and the tradition will continue.” - Mikki K. T. Chart

We are pleased to announce that [DefaultValue(null)] by Stephen Yavorski has been added to the 12th International ARC Salon Exhibition
"When I designed [DefaultValue(null)], I wanted to explore emotion, specifically sadness and depression. These are things that we all feel, but for the most part, try to bury and hide from. There's something interesting that happens when a person is going through depression. They feel alone and helpless, like no one has ever felt the way they're feeling and knows how to sympathize. When someone says to me about this drawing, 'That’s depressing.' or 'Are you OK?', I take it as a compliment and know I've done my job. I’m connecting to something within them that they've either felt or currently feel, knowingly or not. It feels good. Not because I'm making people feel sad, but because I’m helping them, as well as myself, understand that we are not alone with these feelings. These emotions are what make us human. There are more people in our lives than we think that know what sadness is and can truly be there for us when we need them." - Stephen Yavorski The 12th International ARC Salon Exhibition will be on view at the Salmagundi Club, NYC from May 12th – June 1st with the public opening reception on Saturday, May 13th from 11am to 3pm. Looking North and South: European Prints and Drawings 1500-1650
April 6, 2017
Many artists working in Europe in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries contributed to a fascinating and rich period of artistic exchange. Northern artists (predominantly those in the Netherlands and Germany) traveled increasingly to sites in southern Europe (Italy in particular) during this time, and responded in profound ways to Italian art and antique sculpture. The circulation of artistic ideas, practices, and traditions resulted in a dialogue of inspiration and innovation across the continent.
This exhibition explores the character of artistic exchange between the north and south through the production of prints, drawings, and books circa 1500 to 1650. The exhibition takes place at the The Clark Art Institute - 225 South Street, Williamstown, MA, 01267 from March 5 - May 29, 2017. To view more on this and other events, please click here. |

We are pleased to announce that In the Hourglass by Catherine Haverkamp has been added to the 12th International ARC Salon Exhibition.
"In the Hourglass is a visual convergence of multiple conflicts most women have to face at some point in their lives: the internal struggle to balance career with family, the many insecurities or regrets that are attached to the question of whether to have children or not; or mourning the relationship that has transformed when the children have grown and left and the blame that can be internalized for the outcome of the child. The portrait as a reflection is symbolic in the sense that we have a constrained view of women only in the frame of what our society has set as the standard for femininity. The woman in the painting is the only one who can see her true self. The looming shadow of the man in the background is a literal visualization of feeling over-shadowed by male counterparts in the workplace, community and home. The Venus statue which represents the pressures of ideal beauty sits upon textbooks, insinuating how the scales seem to be tilted in what we value in a woman." - Catherine Haverkamp

"As a person who has spent most of his adult life creating music and playing the guitar, I naturally employ the same sort of thought processes when working on my drawings and paintings. I particularly enjoy drawing with charcoal. In the same way a music composer can put down some notes, listen and decide what is worth keeping, so it can be with this medium. Nothing needs to be final as you create and build up your composition as a whole. I work on aluminum panels that I prime with a mixture of neutral grey gesso and pumice stone. This provides me with a very rigid and textured surface which can hold a lot of medium. I like to be able to really push the charcoal into the fine pores and leave nothing too loose or chalky on the finished surface. The end result is a well fixed drawing on a very stable substrate. I tend to keep my narrative as simple as possible. Like many artists, I am compelled by beauty and especially how light can reveal it. While technical merit and practiced skill is very important to me, my main hope is to achieve work that is captivating. For Kate in Lace, I wanted to do a drawing that would be intimate and have a sense of timelessness. Kate’s natural beauty, the traditional lace and pearls placed in chiaroscuro lighting, sets the stage for her gaze towards the viewer." - Roger Schmidt

New Work Added to Live ARC Salon

We are pleased to announce that The Romance of Land and Sea, Cuttyhunk Island by Joseph McGurl has been added to the 12th International ARC Salon Exhibition.
"The Romance of Land and Sea is of Cuttyhunk Island. Cuttyhunk is a sparsely inhabited Island off the Massachusetts coast. This painting was based on a plein air sketch painted at the top of the Island looking over the salt ponds which are used for oyster farming. In the distance is a monument dedicated to Bartholomew Gosnold who explored the coast in 1602. The posts of a chain link fence which leads into the composition are indicative of the military use of the island. The fencing once surrounded World War Two era bunkers which were built as lookouts for spotting submarines coming up Buzzards Bay. There are many anecdotal elements in this painting, but the true subject is the exploration of light, form, space, and color and the use of these elements to translate the multi-dimensional world onto a static two-dimensional surface. With the long view from foreground to the horizon creating a great sense of space, this was an ideal location to address this subject." - Joseph McGurl The 12th International ARC Salon Exhibition will be on view at the Salmagundi Club, NYC from May 12th – June 1st with the public opening reception on Saturday, May 13th from 11am to 3pm. M.C. Escher: Reality and Illusion, taking place at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum located on 700 North 12th Street Wausau, WI 54403 from March 4 - May 28, 2017, displays some of the Dutch artist's most iconic works. Drawn from a large private collection of M.C. Escher's work, Reality and Illusion includes early figure drawings, lesser-known book illustrations, detailed Italian landscapes, tessellations for which he became famous, and examples of his signature architectural fantasies in which stairways seem to go both up and down. We are pleased to announce that The Teeth of Scatha Worm by Matthew Stewart has been added to the 12th International ARC Salon Exhibition.
"The Teeth of Scatha Worm depicts a scene from the appendices of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. A legend of Rohan, the hero, Fram, has slain the dragon, Scatha the Worm. The hero makes a necklace made of the dragon's teeth to give to the dwarves who claim the hoard, along with the haughty reply 'Jewels such as these you will never match in your treasuries, for they are hard to come by.' Images of Fram and Scatha would decorate the tapestries seen by the more well known of Tolkien's characters, Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli as they entered the hall of Edoras hundreds of years later. The small silver horn that Eowyn gives to Merry came from the hoard of Scatha." - Matthew Stewart
